Summer 2026

Live streams created for iPlayer, YouTube and the BBC News Channel, providing pre-match coverage for the home nations’ FIFA World Cup fixtures. The streams expanded the BBC’s tournament coverage with fan speculation, live reactions and expert analysis.

Working within the visual identity developed by BBC Creative, I created the full graphics suite for the streams, including studio dressing for the SPA and Salford Studio, stings, bespoke on-screen graphics, and thumbnails for social media and iPlayer.

Close collaboration with BBC Sport, News Studio and BBC Creative ensured a consistent art direction and a distinct identity that differentiated the streams from the BBC’s main match coverage.

The streams were aimed at underserved audiences and viewers beyond BBC News' traditional audience, the streams were distributed primarily across digital platforms.

The project reached over 2.7 million viewers on iPlayer alone, with 29% of viewers under 35 and 25% from working-family households, making it the most successful News on iPlayer format for reaching underserved audiences.

Development & Experimentation

A month before the start of the tournament, development work for the iPlayer posters and SPA studio dressing began.

Early exploration focused on the country-specific colour palette. At this phase of the development process, work was only shared with the production team, whose feedback would be centred around their production requirements.

Development & Experimentation

As the designs evolved, we moved to the more restrained "Turf" colour palette, as the country colours felt too overpowering and distracted from the presenters and guests.

A key requirement was to give both teams equal prominence throughout the SPA, ensuring the set gave each team enough prominence across different camera angles.

During this stage, designs were regularly shared with the lead designers at BBC Creative.

The World Cup brand was still evolving before the tournament and BBC Creative had to ensure all designs for different programming and platforms from different teams across the BBC aligned with the visual identity they created.

Safe Frames

Due to iPlayer's limitations across a wide range of devices, the final posters had to conform to a highly restrictive safe frame.

This was necessary because text posters could be pulled into different slots with varying specifications depending on the device being used.

Final Poster

The final posters featured two key players from the opposing teams. As a passionate football fan, I was keen to select players who were in strong form and making a significant impact throughout the tournament.

This approach strengthened the visual impact of the poster and highlighted the players who were most relevant to the audience.

Fixtures

These were the Home Nation’s fixtures which had Countdown streams. Not all Home Nations matches featured a Countdown stream, with coverage influenced by time differences that could affect audience reach, as well as occasions when the SPA was required for major breaking news coverage.
