iPlayer Thumbnail

The Science and Climate team managed to capture a lot of strong imagery and footage during their time in Antarctica.
Thumbnails are most effective when their clear, concise and add a sense of allurement that engages an audience and sparks their curiosity.
Therefore, I felt going for one of the strong images the production team sent me and getting the most out of the image would be the most effective approach.
This programme performed above expectation on iPlayer, even sitting in the “Our World at Winter” iPlayer rail throughout the Christmas holidays alongside David Attenborough’s Frozen Planet and some of the BBC’s world class nature documentaries.
Notable inspirations include Frozen Planet, Planet Earth and The Blue Planet. All of which use strong imagery and allow the image to do the heavy lifting.

Image Retouch
As the approach for this thumbnail was to get the absolute most from the image. I colour graded the image to emphasis the blue to inject more colour into the poster as well as give the image a more frozen feel.
I also slightly increased the contrast to add more depth and removed the production crews dingy as it was a distraction and spoiled the mysterious isolated atmosphere I wanted to go for.
I also composited some artificial sun to help the text be more legible, introduce warmer tones into the thumbnail and to also add to the cinematic atmosphere aesthetic I was aiming for.
