This thumbnail was created for the BBC news website to promote the article and News on iPlayer’s programme, Catapult Crimes: Killing for Fun.
Both the article and programme explore the dangerous caused by Catapults on local wildlife and people.
The BBC also investigate the legitimate uses of Catapults and the uses beyond Catapults being used as a harmful weapon.

Thumbnail

The index promo is an adaption of the original iPlayer thumbnail for the programme, using the same hero image of the catapult shooter in the foreground and using the On the Front Line’s brand colours in the background.
The thumbnail was adapted to a more editorial illustration design which fits within the style BBC News tend to use on their website. As index promos don’t have text, there was more real estate to scale up the shooter.
The Square was added to help the shooter contrast from the background and to give the shooter more impact through utilising more of the composition and giving the viewer something obvious to focus their eye on.
I also added images of geese flying away in the background to give the design a sense of urgency and to give the impression the geese are flying away from our shooter.
Index promos tend to be very metaphorical and often communicate the story of the article visually as this can spark a reader’s curiosity. Therefore, it was important to adapt the original iPlayer poster into something more figurative as audience expectations are distinctive for different platforms.
The design used in this article was a solid source of inspiration to get the ball rolling. This was my first ever index promo for the news website as I mainly creating graphics for iPlayer.

he crosshair motif was later removed as it overly complicates the design, lessens the impact of the shooter and would also look too busy at smaller resolutions such as on the “More to Explore” rail.
The idea behind the crosshair motif was to frame our shooter as well as emulate the feeling of aiming a catapult visually through the feeling of pulling back your arm and choosing a longitude and latitude to aim for.
